Dentition

This simply means the teeth that are present in your mouth. You go through different “stages” in your dental development.

Primary Dentition

The only teeth visible in your mouth are your primary (baby) teeth. Your permanent teeth are developing in your jaws. They are not yet visible. This stage will last from the time you erupt your first primary tooth until you get your first permanent tooth, usually about the age of six. You then enter the next stage - mixed dentition.

Mixed Dentition

You have a few permanent teeth and a few primary teeth present in your mouth. This stage usually lasts from the age of about six years to the age of about twelve years. You then enter the last stage - permanent dentition.

Permanent Dentition

The only teeth present in your mouth are your permanent teeth
